Sometime, about 1940, Game Warden Kenneth Fallang, Sid Brannin and Sy Neven planted Brook Trout fingerlings in Cascade Lake. They had to back pack these fish over the steepest terrain from the foot of Cascade Peak to the lake near the top of the mountain. By 1949-50 these fish had grown to about two pound beauties. I fished it then, It was a tough walk, but worth it. A few years later the Brook were replaced with Yellowstone Cutthroad, likely by airplane. In the early '60's these were very nice fish. I'm too old to go up there now, but that is a hazzard of old age. Bernard Hakes, Jim Brannin, Ralph Cosgriff and I (Buck Ward) were amont the early fishermen. Some of the natives along Sweet Grass Creek call this the Hell Roar Lake. It is a hell of a climb, but great. A hiker can come in from Carrocia's Sweet Grass Ranch - or from section 9 on Ralph and Barbara Cosgriffs holdings. It is well to check with these rancher first. heard that a few people have hiked over the mountain from the Big Timber Creek side. Fishermen and climbers are a little odd. My moothr used to say that people had two legs for sitting on a horse and shouldnt misuse them by hiking in rough country.
