Lake Earl is the largest lake in Del Norte County, but because tourists can't see it from U.S.101-and because it provides only mediocre fishing-the lake gets very little attention. It is in a unique setting though, near sea level and less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Lake Tolowa, its neighbor to the west, is connected to Lake Earl by a short, narrow, curving piece of water. It borders coastal sand dunes and sometimes overflows into the ocean after heavy rainfall.
