The city of Carlsbad has closed the lake. The area has never had any rules and people come in leave their trash, fish without a license and disturb the wildlife. Hopefully the City will never let anyone back in!!!

I called Carlsbad water dept. and asked about the closure and the man said on the phone the lake is closed to fishing. I asked by whom. He said DFG. I pulled my current copy of DFG rules and regs and there is no mention of Calavera lake. I called DFG San Diego office and the lady said if there are no specific rules, the lake falls under general DFG guidlines. So apparently there are no fishing closures, (by the way, I found nothing posted at the lake either.) or fishing restrictions at the lake, except for normal fish take limits and license requirements. I think some people are just trying to bully others into believing the lake is closed to fishing.

The lake is a wild life preserve and fishing is not allowed. It is not stocked but heard there is good bass in their. They are trying to get the population up before it's open to the public

Went out to the lake for my annual pre-spring floatubing bass exrtavaganza only to be confronted by an employee of the CNLM. (Centers for Natural Lands MNGMNT.)He informed me that the City of Carlsbad had recently hired them to regulate the 600 acres of land that we know as Calavera and that the lake is no longer open to floatubing or any kind of personal watercraftand that fishing is limited to shoreline but even that is not technically allowed.I asked him how long this has been going on and he said about three wks.I know that I've fished that lake for twenty years and never been denied access. I've been approached several times by the DFG WITH NO PROBLEMS.I hear that in a preliminary study they found the much travled quaggma muscle on the south end of the lake, a frog that may be on the endangered species list and a small fish kill off. The fish kill off has been going on for years. People the majority of this water is RUNOFF FROM THE STREETS AND DRAINAGE DITCHES AND CANALS!It is not water being used for drinking or crops and groves. Why must they take away everything thats free and accessable. I remember when you could go off roading out there, shooting, motorcycle riding people would camp and swim and dogs could get a good workout along with horses. All that has been taken away with the exception of walking and mountain bike riding(LIKE THAT DOESN'T HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE ENVIROMENT) So now what do we do, where do we go.What will we do with our free time now that the majority of our stress relief avenues are shrinking? Sit at home and smoke crack and then go on some negative rampage. Damn! I guess thats why they say beaucracy kills.

I have enjoyed fishing at the for years and have seen many changes that have a negative effect on the wildlife. There is alot more trash and dog waste all over the trails and in surrounding areas. There are no signs posted that says fishing is not allowed,I do carry my fishing license and sometimes see others fishing as well. My 7yr old caught a 3 pound bass last sunday, and has happy fishing memories that will last a lifetime. People should pick up after their dogs once they do their business, we all know that has an effect on the enviroment. Fishing isn't the greates, but it's still fun with the family, and thats what a park should be,family fun. So if you go to the lake, pick up after your dog, pick up your trash, and stay out of the restricted areas for sensitive wildlife.

I am 43 and I fished and hiked around this lake a couple times a week when I was in my early teens and twenties. I am sorry to see that it has become so built up around the lake and apparently no longer open to fishing. The lake use to have great bass, panfish, and catfish fishing if you were in a boat, as there was limited access to the shoreline. It used to be nice to have a decent place to fish for free. I guess the" Great Outdoors" need to be turned into a museum. Don't touch, just look?

Hi, Fishing at the Lake is allowed. The Center (under contract to manage the Lake) has been told to change our signs and allow fishing (we were first told to prohibit it). Our main job is to ensure that fishermen are not damaging the shoreline and that we get them to remove their trash. We will update our signs soon. Sorry for the confusion. Call 619 279 4953 for more information.
