I'm not sure if Vance just moved from the Great Lakes and expects to see the bottom of every lake, but these lakes put out huge fish because of its bog which consists of needed grasses, mud flats, lily pads, hyacinth, a good amount of stumps and logs or cover, hundreds of docks, and spots that reward fisherman for hard work put into getting back there. If you are going out there for the first time without a depth finder, start right at the HWY 44 boat ramp and fish the curving shoreline to the bridge and toss artificial frogs, spinner baits, darker colored trick or stick and floating worms with little weight depending on wind, as well as plastic jerk baits. These baits will be clutch all day if you work it right. Its pretty important to figure out the biology of the spot you pull your first fish out of, it may turn out to be the pattern for the day like depth, cover, bait, sky, time. If you do have a depth finder you can always try to find the changes in depth off the shore if you want to give crank baits a shot, but beware of the numerous jet skis and pleasure boaters that seem to never miss a good day. If you want quality over quantity be prepared to sit out in a few lily pad fields with plastic frogs and flipping gear... and do not pack lightly, heavy tackle is not as much an option as a requirement. If you plan to use live bait Molly McGee's located on HWY 44 sells different sizes of live shiner and minnow. The few times I've used shiners the game plan has been to rig a cork 24 to 48 inches away from the hook and do a slow troll along pad or grass lines. Make sure you go slow because the cork creates a 'V' in the water where you will notice your bait flipping out of the water when a big bass has it's number. There are quite a few lakes and canals to the chain, so if you are taking time off to visit it's best to plan a few days. Finally, for the good of the population and community, please practice catch and release.
