If you want to enjoy this section of the Mississippi get out there now! The tournament crazies has discovered it and are now putting on annual tournaments. This will lead to the demise of the excellent trophy smallmouth fishing. This is due to carring around and culling the largest fish which leads to instant and delayed mortality. It's sad but what can I say. I've done it myself but saw what was happening and have now declined to participate. Early mornings can be a great time to throw topwater baits upriver. When this brown buggers are going it can be heart stopping action. Later in the day move up into the currrent and stick with the topwater baits. Some (many of the tournament anglers) will move downriver and fish with small plastics and tubes. I don't like to do this because to many fish are gut hooked. The last trip out we hit a major feeding period and had a blast catching many nice fish on buzz baits and poppers. Late fall is a good time to fish walleyes. Concentrate on the uppper and lower ends of the holes. Jigs and minnows are your best bet. Go get "em" but treat them nice.
