Have fished Watauga Lake for over 40 years. Have caught rainbow trout up to nearly 8 lbs. The hot trout now is the laker. My best results has been downrigging spoons 35 to 65 ft deep, largest fish this year was a 7lb laker and the average size is 18 to 24 inches. March i think is the best month of the year when the water is in mid 40's surface temp. Fish Springs Marina sells a variety of spoons for downrigging and they have given me the best results. The daily limit is 2 so i turn back anything under 20 in. You must have a good fishfinder like the hds lowrances or the 700 series hummingbird that can seperate fish from the alewife bait schools because if you're off 5 ft of the correct depth the catch ratio goes way down. For me the lake trout is better tablefare than the walleye.
