I have been to Baptiste Lake 3 times. The first and last time, I entered via the Big Sandy opening on the west side of the Continental Divide and backpacked the 17 or so miles over Haley Pass and down into the Headwaters of the Popo Agie and Baptiste Lake. 16 to 18 inch native cutthroat, as many as you would like to catch all day long. Golden Trout in the streams nearby as well as the small lakes on the top of Haley Pass were also very rewarding to catch. They were the prettiest fish I have ever seen. I released them all. The second trip that I made to Baptiste, was from the East side of the mountain range. We accessed the most beautiful valley in the world by crossing Bear's Ears Pass above Fort Washakie, down into the valley past Valentine Lake, Grave lake, and on up to Baptiste. We went in to the area much earlier than before (June) and did much of our hiking over huge snow fields. We literally found icebergs floating on Baptiste lake. The fishing may have been ok for someone who knew how to fish that Icy water but nothing I had with me attracted any fish at all. I suppost the locals were waiting on the bottom for warmer water. I've been to many back country fisheries and this is without question, the best place I ever have or will visit. I hope I can get at least one more trip into that heavenly country before these old bones and joints totally fail me.
